Your equipment might be out to get you...

Men – Is your shaft stiff enough?

OK, now that I got your attention, let me remind you that this is a golf column and you need to get all those filthy, disgusting thoughts out of your mind. Yes, you know what I am talking about and I know you know that I know that you know what you’re thinking…so forget it.

We’ll leave your balls out of it for now…

Stop thinking like that. We are talking about the shaft for your golf clubs. OK? Sheesh.

Junior Golf in VN still in its infancy...

One of my friends has a 2 ½ year old son and they take him to the driving range once a week or so to hit balls. Yes, both parents play golf rather well and would like their son to play the game eventually too. Whenever I see little Daniel whacking balls, I have to smile because, while his backswing form is non-existent, he attacks the ball with complete commitment and, incredibly enough, holds the finish pose quite correctly. Somebody grab a camera!

Normally, I would be hesitant to see parents teaching their kids golf, because most have swings which should not be copied by any human on the planet – except Jerry Lewis.

Tiger doesn't cheat at golf...knowingly...

It seems like nothing goes right for Tiger Woods lately. Even when his swing – if it can be called that – works, he goes and screws it up with an unnecessary penalty. This time involved what we call “oscillation” where the golf ball moves, but comes back to rest in its original position but it Tiger’s case, it didn’t.

Well, to be fair, Tiger said it did, but unfortunately, the videographer working for the PGA Tour showed the videotape which proved it didn’t.

When something you want seems to be slipping from your grasp, people sometimes tend to get a bit desperate and want things to be as they want them to be, rather than what they actually are.  (read more)

Sorry, proper dress will never be jeans and "you suck" t-shirts...

There has been a fascinating argument on how to boost golf rounds in the US. Predictably, many people are ready to toss out the baby with the bath water in an effort to generate more profits for themselves.

Yes, these are the same people who always want what they want when they want it and nobody better get in their way. They are Yuppies who now own golf courses and what they want is profits and since they have never felt any connection with tradition, golf’s history is nothing to them.  (read more)

With instructors, one size does NOT fit all...

Many people have asked me how to choose a good golf instructor and the answer isn’t as easy as you might think, simply because of what is involved.

First of all, I wouldn’t judge any instructor solely by whatever alphabet he has after his name. Throughout the world, there are many people out there giving lessons who shouldn’t be, despite any particular association they belong to. That pro might be a great player or a great administrator, but teaching is a specialty and one that requires years of experience and continued study.

Having said that, there are also a lot of good ones out there and to find them, you need to ask around. The ones that get good results are easy to find because everyone is talking good about them. (read more)

Poor economy delays professional golf event in VN...

Well, it seems that Vietnam will have to wait a while longer to return to international-level professional golf. It might seem to a few that it’s just another case of “SNAFU” or “Situation Normal” for short, but that’s not the case this time.

In a nutshell, Asian professional golf, in general, has been suffering from a lack of quality sponsors with sufficiently deep pockets, so it’s not just the proposed US$500,000 Volvik-Sky Lake Vietnam Masters which is delayed.

This is happening all over the region...(read more)
